October 14 Detailed Programme

Morning workshops (10:00-12:00)

Workshop 1: Screening of David Rothauser’s film, “Hibakusha, Our Life to Live” & Talk

Mr Rothauser is a filmmaker and peace activist who has been working for a clause similar to Article 9 to be included within the US Constitution. His film, “Hibakusha, our Life to Live” was released in 2010 and screened at the United Nations. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has also recommended the film be screened around the world.

He will be joined by Hibakusha (atomic bomb survivor) Kimura Tamiko giving testimony, and a report from the lawyers’ group representing Hibakusha in their lawsuits for official acknowledgement of A-bomb induced diseases.

Workshop 2: Article 9 in Asia

Within the situation of many threats against peace in East Asia including the tensions on the Korean Peninsula, nuclear and missile issues, territorial issues, historical reconciliation issues, and more, guests from Korea, Taiwan and the Philippines will join to discuss how to build peace in this region from the perspective of citizens, and the role that Article 9 has played as a foundation for peace in the East Asian region.

Coordinator: Niikura Osamu (Professor, Aoyama Gakuin University)

Workshop 3: Youth and Article 9

Japanese society today is experiencing an intangible kind of anxiety. Some voices claim that there is now a need for defence through military means and the right to collective self-defence, however is the pacifism of Article 9 really “unrealistic”? We would like to think about what we consider as “real”, the distance we may feel from”peace”, and what we ourselves can do as agents for change. We will discuss together with many guests active in various fields our thoughts about Article 9, and consider how we can share this with our peers and even younger generations. Let’s get together to look at these issues, and use our imagination to think about the future.
